outdoor events

The Kairos String Quartet is happy to perform for your outdoor event, and we hope with you that the weather will be perfect on that day!  Because of the value of our instruments, and our desire to perform at our best, there are important considerations for outdoor performance.

Precipitation

The instruments must be protected from even the slightest drizzle.  If there is any chance of rain, a tent or awning with sides that is sizable enough to protect us from blowing rain must be provided.  An alternative is another nearby shelter close to the event location, where we can play protected and still be heard.  Please have an option ready in case the weather turns unexpectedly.

Direct Sunlight

Our instruments risk serious damage when exposed to direct sunlight.  We must be positioned in a fully-shaded area.  Be sure to check beforehand that the area will be shaded at the time of day of your event.  If not, an awning that covers a 10 foot by 10 foot area can provide shade.  Keep in mind the angle of the sunlight when positioning the awning.

Temperature

It is difficult for us to play well in cold or very hot temperatures, and the instruments do not hold their tuning.  If the temperature at the time of the event is between 62 degrees F and 90 degrees F, we will be fine.  If the temperature is below 62 degrees, please have an option ready for either outdoor space heaters or an indoor location.  If the temperature is above 90 degrees, please have an option ready for an indoor cool location.  If there is a chance of low or high temperatures, we will bring 2 thermometers (to ensure accuracy), and encourage you to bring one of your own.

Wind

Strong wind blows our music off the stands, the stands over onto the ground, and even will blow our bows off the strings!  We also risk getting hit by blowing objects (our cellist was once hit by a golf ball during a particularly windy wedding ceremony, with minor injury). In case of a windy day, please have a sheltered location ready, such as the by the side of a building.

Insects

Please be aware of bee and mosquito activity at your event location.  Hopefully the venue will have any problems under control.  You may want to have insect repellent available to us and to your guests.

We ask that you kindly be prepared for the above situations, so that all will go smoothly at the time of your event.  We wish to avoid any last minute delays or potentially awkward situations.
